Placement Test

All applicants who wish to learn English as a Secondary Language (ESL) will take a placement test to determine their appropriate ESL level. The scores are used to place students in the appropriate course levels.  The placement test will be provided by the Brighten Language Center. 

TOEFL iBT® TEST PREPARATION

TOEFL iBT® Test Preparation Program

Note: The TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level.

  • Course Hours: The total hours for the TOEFL iBT Prep course are composed of 120 lessons. 
  • Course Objectives: This program prepares students for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based exam. The iBT TOEFL is comprised of four equally weighted parts: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will develop skills of note-taking, paraphrasing, summarizing and synthesizing – skills necessary for both the TOEFL and future academic success. 
  • TOEFL Course Outline listed below: 
  • TOEFL Listening: This module provides intensive practice in preparation for the Listening portion of the TOEFL test. Students listen to audiotapes of sample TOEFL questions and do practice exercises. Other exercises such as dictation and listening to radio programs, television shows, movies, and lectures are incorporated into the instruction to enhance listening skills.
  • TOEFL Reading: This module provides intensive and extensive reading comprehension practice from sample TOEFL reading tests, novels, short stories, newspapers, magazines, and other literary works. Vocabulary building, reading comprehension and timed reading will be reinforced in this course
  • TOEFL Writing: This module provides comprehensive instruction in essay composition using sample TOEFL topics. Students will learn how to analyze the essay question, outline their essay, create and support their thesis with specific examples, and compose complex sentence structure and paragraph development.
  • TOEFL Speaking: This module provides an in-depth analysis and practice of both the independent and integrated speaking tasks of the TOEFL. Emphasis will be placed on building vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and developing fluency.
  • Placement in TOEFL Program: ESL applicants must receive a Placement Test score of Level 5 or higher to participate in the TOEFL program.

English Courses

Intensive English Course 

This course is a 30-lesson per week course. It is highly desired for international students seeking I-20 (F1 Student Visa) and/or to transfer to a university or college level education in the US. In this course we cover all of the major language skills including: grammar, vocabulary, conversation, pronunciation, listening comprehension, reading, and writing. All intermediate and advanced students also have a choice of electives two afternoons per week. This course is designed with three sections A, B and C. Semi-Intensive English Course 

This course is a 24-lesson per week course. This is also a highly desired course for international students seeking I-20 (F1 Student Visa) and/or to transfer to a university of college level education in the US. In this course we cover English communication skills. This course is designed of three sections A, B and C. Students are expected to attend classed Monday through Friday as listed below and on the course schedule listed in the school catalog. 


Comprehensive English Course 

This course is a 20-lesson per week course. This course is not intended for international students seeking I-20 (F1 Student Visa), but rather for individuals seeking to improve their English communication skills. This course is designed of two sections A and B. Students are expected to attend classed Monday through Friday as listed below and on the course schedule listed in the catalog.

IELTS Test Preparation Program

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. 

  • Course Hours: The total hours for the IELTS Prep course are composed of 120 lessons. 
  • Course Objectives: This program prepares students for the International English Language Test System (IELTS) exam. The IELTS is comprised of four equally weighted parts: reading, writing, listening and speaking. BUSINESS, CASUAL, ONE-ON-ONE

Business Development English Course

This course is a total of 32-lesson per week, 3 months’ program. English for the professional course. It is not intended for international students seeking I-20 (F1 Student Visa), but rather for business men/woman seeking to improve their overall English language reading and writing skills. 

The course focuses on the following Key language skills:


  • Speaking, Listening, Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading and Writing.

 

Additionally, the student will actively participate in learning the following workplace skills: 


  • Giving presentations, negotiating, participating in meetings, networking, writing emails, Management styles, team building, job satisfaction, communications, business relationships, strategy, finance, marketing, training, project management, ethics, and more.


Casual Learner English Course

This course is a 10 to 30 lesson per week course, intended for tourists or any individual seeking to improve their overall English language skills. This course is not intended for international students seeking I-20 (F1 Student Visa). The student has the choice of enrolling in one or more sections as listed below and in the Brighten Language Center Catalog.   

20-Lesson per Week One-On-One Course

 This is a 20-lesson per week course that is designed on a case-by-case basis. It is not intended for international students seeking I-20 (F1 Student Visa). This course could apply for a very broad range (and age) of students. Students that need to learn the alphabet to students that have other advanced individualized learning needs. The personal teacher may be able to even work around the student’s availability as long as 20-lessons (each lesson 50 minutes) are scheduled per week.
